How construction consulting became a niche industry success – a “Future of Australia” podcast

Earlier this year our co-founder and Managing Director Gina Patrick was a guest on the “Future of Australia” podcast following a 27% growth in revenue landing us on the 2018 Financial Review list of 100 fastest growing new companies.

In the podcast they discussed her background, diverse business experience and desire to be driving something of greater impact which led to the partnership with co-founder and Technical Director Peter Blain, to create Plus Systems (Plus Passive Fire).

Taking the time to reflect on the challenges they had to overcome in the first 12 months that led to rapid growth and their vision for the future, they discuss:

  • Why they hired full time employees rather than contractors in order to invest in their long-term success, training and growth

  • The importance of being cash flow funded and the need to get paid upfront

  • Carving out their niche as consultants by identifying a gap in the industry between the off-site fire engineer and the final contractor, to be on-site and provide knowledge in all situations

  • Why they feel it is best to price on value and how this helped them re-invest in themselves and provide better services

  • Why having unique knowledge, high level experience, and 30 years of industry experience convinced her that value could not be condensed down into an hourly rate

  • Being tech conscious from day one, finding alternatives to manual, offline, or legacy processes

  • How recent tragedies and the resulting legislative changes have increased awareness and understanding

  • Queensland’s strict fire protection standards on buildings, and how large over-run projects make it easy to convince people of the many risks

  • Training as a core focus of their business, including on-site and in-house training, certifications as well as informal training

  • How the huge expense of reworks makes the value and benefit of their service much clearer

  • Why drive and passion motivate you to sell more and find an abundance to invest in your business

  • The goal to bring together complementary construction consultants

  • Their plans to expand

  • The core mission to educate, both internally and across the industry to ultimately protect lives.
